I was born in 1981, and grew up in rural Idaho among the farm lands of the Snake River valley, the historic land of the Shoshone people. I earned a BFA in Illustration from Boise State in 2006 and an MFA from The New York Academy of Art in 2009.
Artist Statement
My research revolves around the investigation of personal history, inheritance, memory, Identity, Post Colonialism and Indigeniety. I investigate Postcolonial notions about culture and representation of culture; it stems from my experiences of being of mixed race Hispano-Indigenous person. In many ways I am responding to the isolation of growing up in rural Idaho and being an English Language Learner. The
isolation provided a kind of binary opposition, one of preservation of traditional cultural practices while simultaneously creating more distance between dominant culture and myself. The experience becomes a liminal one, what it means to be “Hispanic” in White Geography.
These processes are explored through juxtaposition and re-contextualizing of images. Personal histories can be a product of inheritance and those, which are not necessarily experienced first hand, but imposed upon by society, roles, categories and language. One of my primary interests is with European art, its techniques and compositional strategies. However, I aim to tell a non European story, one where history is reevaluated or even re-imagined. My work revolves around the exploration and expression of experiences of Indigenous roots, Mexican culture and American life. It often encompasses depictions of modern life with aspects of traditional practices. The combination of the two is what I see as Past meets Present. I ask the viewer who relishes European art to also consider “are our stories not beautiful ones as well”? “What if these stories were those of BIPOC Bodies, would you still find them important or beautiful?”
